Agree, its not about crowning the best team as champion.

As you point out, in baseball a playoff would not be necessary. The best team would best be determined by the regular season, not a team winning a 7 game series 4 games to 3. A playoff is about giving teams that may not be the best an opportunity to rise to the occasion of a tournament and possibly outplay a better team and win a championship. Any Given Sunday. The championship goes to the team that shows up the best and plays the best under the pressure of the moment.
